Animation in Sofia
THE INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FILM FESTIVAL GOLDEN KUKER- SOFIA 2015
The sixth International Animation Film Festival "Golden Kuker – Sofia“ was held in a new location - the Museum of Sofia (in the building of the former Central bath) and the Cinema House. In those seven days were included competitive and information programs, retrospectives, tributes and the traditional for the festival Children's Day. There were also meetings between students from the UK and Taiwan with students from the National Academy for Theater and Film Arts “Krastyo Sarafov” , who have given promise of bilateral cooperation between educational institutions. Meanwhile there were workshops, exhibitions, presentation of the project for the new Bulgarian animated series "The Golden Apple" etc.
The competition program was rich and diverse and the fight for prizes - controversial. The level of the films this year was very high. The audience of Sofia saw an assortment of selected works that give an idea about the current development of world animation. Indicative for that the festivals in Bulgaria are becoming more popular among the most famous artists from all over the globe, is the fact that almost month and a half before the festival in Annecy, considered the law-maker in animation film, we saw in advance dozen films from the French forum. Bulgarian professionals and connoisseurs more and more often are able to watch in our country the vanguard of world animation now.
For the last years the festival “Golden Kuker” has been making efforts to attract more audience. Winning strategy in this direction is the inclusion of more feature films, since it is known that this is what fills the halls. The competition had 8 full-length films and the prize went to “The Boy And The World”, by the Brazilian Ale Abreu, which came in Sofia with an impressive list of international awards. The artwork looks like a children's film, painted in a minimalist style. Gradually, however, the viewer is drawn into an incredible area of colors, stylized forms and sharply changing perspectives mounted in a precise rhythm. The little hero embarks on a journey across Brazil in search of his departed father. This kind of roadmovie animation shows a kaleidoscopic picture of life in the country, marking the sharpest contrasts in the exotic for us world. The simple ritual of harvest or picking cotton, together with folk festival, creates a true pageant of colors. Nature with its grass, flowers, ponds and rivers bears the imprint of the color simplicity of children album. The city, on the contrary, is threatening, mechanized, overcrowded, inhumane, designed in dark red and black tones and claustrophobic spaces. In it we see the kingdom of landfills - despondent shelter for human beings and soulless overmechanized factories, ports and high-tech cranes, resembling scary dinosaurs. The film doesn’t have a happy ending. Perhaps it is too sociological in their messages, but this is compensated by the incredible poetic world created by Abreu with frugal means and meanwhile hidden, implicit effects in the creation of three-dimensional space.
Children’s movies, which are also a bet on higher viewer attendance this year have shown very high quality. Therein, the Russian animation school is traditionally presented with strong and interesting works. The award for best children's film was given to the charming "Pik Pik Pik" by Dmitry Vysotskiy for amazing synchronicity between music and image in the history of the Battle of the longtime enemies (Woodpecker and ants) against the woodcutter who threatens their home. Tight rhythmic animation by the music of Delibes is an achievement that should not be passed by since it simultaneously raises environmental problems, but the film presents it in an entertaining way for children.
Contender for the prize was the poetic debut of Olesya Shchukina "The Elephant and The Bicycle" (France) - stylized piece of the discrepancy between advertised goods and reality, as well as finding a friend. Sadly lyrical tone of the film and unusually expressive characters convey the nuances of the emotions of a sympathetic but excessively huge elephant, who works as a city duster. And the love of the donkey from the zoo with the female giraffe is the basis of "She-Giraffe" by Anastasiya Sokolova (Russia) - a film about dreams and their fulfillment, realized with different drawing style in day’s and night’s scenes.
The Award in the category of Episode from tv logically went again to the children's film - "Piglet Babysitter" by Natalya Berezovaya (Russia). Pure entertainment from the merry havoc of those little ruffians - this time they are pigs in the farmyard - illustrated with hilarious characters and an absurd behind cadre commentary.
In the category "Eco-film" was been awarded "The Black Island" by Nino Christen (Switzerland). It deals with the disclosure of definitive link between corruption and deforestation in stylish black and white graphics. The student film award went to "Tusk" by Rory Uodbi-Toli (UK) – gloomy story about defrosted mammoth who should "integrate" into civilization. The result is unfortunate – from the boredom of his job as a janitor in a museum, to the sessions at the psychoanalyst and haters in the social networks.
As always, the student program was interesting, fresh and various. "Alda" by Ana Cardoso, Liliana Sobreiro, Filipe Fonseca and Luis Catania (Portugal) is a watercolor reflection of the life of an abandoned elderly woman whose village will soon be flooded by the dam lake. "Pollock" by Henry Dunbar (UK) is an ironic caricature look at Jackson Pollock and abstract art and the clay animation of "Hot snow" by Ira Elshansky (Israel) is dedicated to conflict between generations, but also to forgiveness and understanding. Here I would especially like to note the presence of Eleonora Asparuhova who lives and teaches in Britain, with her artistically painted in black and white animation based on "Song of the man" by Vaptsarov. That was the only Bulgarian presence in the student program (though the production is English), which is surprising because in previous editions of the festival the activity of our young animators was quite noticeable.
In the competition The GRAND PRIX “Golden Kuker” went to the nominee for "Oscar" Konstantin Bronzit and his "We can’t live without cosmos" (Russia). In a brief but unusual way the master creates a parable about friendship and dream. The film includes many bizarre cartoon provocations, changes in space, in time, in cosmos, on land, at home ... plot twists are on the one hand, a parody of the Russian way to create a space program, but on the other - they keep the faith in affection between human beings and their relationship in the afterlife.
In the category from 10 to 45 minutes, Brazil was awarded: “Guida” by Rosana Urbes (Brazil) - a film realized with incredible whirlwindly watercolor-pencil drawing, which brings us back to the artistic sound of total animation with the abundance of movements, foreshortening and strokes. In short films up to 10 minutes “Aubade” by Mauro Carraro (Switzerland) took the prize for its lovely violoncello impression on the background of the rising sun over the lake. In this category, however, there was a strong competition and I must mention the very “filmmaking” and beautifully drawn film by Paulo D’Alva - "Carrotrope" (Portugal), as well as the tastefull graphics of "The Wait of May" by Simone Massi (Italy). Surprise was "Mr. Violet" by Abbas Jalali Yekta and Mohammad Hossein Azam Pour (Iran), where a naive love story is painted on real coffee cups.
The Bulgarian participation seemed to delight us most. Our animations represented at the festival didn’t draw back to the world leaders and a special prize "Proiko Proykov" went to Dimitar Dimitrov and "The Day of bleeding gums" - an interesting experiment, painted on a smartphone. The film is based on a story by Dilian Elenkov and the behind cadre commentary is a reflection on the artist, on the meaning (or lack of it) of creative work, on selling, on the creative crisis. Dimitar Dimitrov has visualized this material with a lot of imagination, rich metamorphoses and transformations, which to show instability in the world, the lack of firm support, the sinking of inspiration into nullity. Dark background and bright thin mark contribute to the overall feeling that the world is a black hole in which only for an instant moment the mortal human beings appear. The film already has numerous international awards.
This year the jury was tempted to give an special prize called "100 years Bulgarian cinema and 100 years Bulgarian animated films".Few Bulgarians know that not only live-action films, but also the animation have reasons to celebrate centennial anniversary. Most of the filmmakers remember the noisy celebrations during socialism on the occasion of "40-th anniversary" of Bulgarian animation ... It was the beginning of a myth, which marked only the date of the administrative act setting up a department for drawed and puppet films to Cinematography, the nationalized in 1948. This version of "birth" of our animation fully crosses out not only the attempts of Stoyan Venev and Vasil Bakardjiev, Alexander Denkov and Dimitar Todorov- Zharava from the 30s and 40s, but completely ignores Raiko Alexiev. A short note in the newspaper "People's rights" reports that a charity screening "for the first time will present Bulgarian cartoon film made by Raiko Alexiev on 15. XII. 1915." [1] So, in the same year in which "Balgaran Is Gallant" occurs ,the audience of Sofia has seen the film of our distinguished artist cartoonist. The reward of these centennial anniversary events went to "Compote Collective" for the collective project "Touch and verse ". The separate parts of the project are actually independent films: "A Petty Morning Crime" by Asparuh Petrov, "Natural Novel in 8 chapters" by Milen Vitanov, "Odeon" by Boris Despodov "Milkmaid" by Ivan Bogdanov, "100% Mood" by Dmitry Yagodin, "Postindustial" by Boris Pramatarov. The unifying factor here is that the authors’ visual interpretations of contemporary Bulgarian poetry, but realized with different styles and approaches ranging between surrealism, black grotesque and "reality". It should be noted that this project is not another of the films-omnibuses. "Compote Collective" for the first time in a long time (in fact from the closure of Animation Studio "Sofia") creates a creative environment where authors can interact and compete with one another. This definitely gives artistic results - "Postindastrial" this year was selected in the fiercely contested competition in Annecy, and "Anna Blume" by Vesela Dancheva in one of panoramas.
Festival "Golden Kuker Sofia" already has won prestige. World famous authors show movies in its halls. The organizers make continuous efforts to attract more audience, but in this respect the lost reflexes for short animation films still have to be overcome. However, the festival continued - with children's festival of Vitosha on 1st June, and visited several cities.
Nadezhda Marinchevska
P.S. "We can’t live without cosmos" by Konstantin Bronzit (Russia), who received the "Golden Kuker" in Sofia in May, was honored with the the Annecy Cristal for best short film. Two more films from the Sofia Festival were marked in Annecy: “Guida” by Rosana Urbes (Brazil), who took the award in the category 10 to 45 min., has been received the award "Jean-Luc Xiberras"for debut and “The Master” by Riho Unt(Estonia) - Special Jury Award.
