My name is Luca, and I am an Italian animation director based in the UK working in short films and advertising.
My journey began at Slinky Pictures, a London animation studio, where I had the opportunity to work with incredible talented people like Maria Manton, Chris Shepherd, Chris Morris and David Shrigley among others. During my time at Slinky I gained valuable experience across the animation process, from storyboarding to character design to post-production.
In 2008, I co-directed my first short film ‘Breaking the Mould’ which won the Depict Audience Award at Encounters Film Festival. This success gave me the confidence to transition into a freelance animator role. Over the next few years I worked for different clients on several advertising campaigns for major brands including BBC, C4, Volvo and Honda.
One of my first freelance jobs was on the launch of the hugely successful Little Big Planet game for the PSP. I still fondly remember today the long hours the incredible work, passion and laughter shared with the crew at Clapham Road Studios.
In 2011 I had my first brush with celebrity working on the visual for Rihanna’s world tour, ‘Last Girl on Earth’ alongside creative director Simon Henwood.
I also animated the Noel Fielding TV series ‘Luxury Comedy’ for Channel 4; a journey inside Noel’s wonderful and mad imagination.
In 2014 I joined Picasso Pictures as one of their directors. During my time at Picasso I had the invaluable experience of pitching on multiple projects and collaborating with others talents in storyboards, visuals and character designs.
In 2018 I transformed my online project of animated gifts ‘Things You Can Do With Extendable Arms’ into a short film that won several awards at international film festivals including the Los Angeles Animation Festival.
By 2019 with the arrival of my first child, the onset of Covid pandemic, I redefined my approach to work. My partner and I decided to share childcare responsibilities, leading to a shift from long hours with big production companies to working from home on smaller, more crafted projects.
This period allowed me to reflect on my career and rediscover my passion for storytelling. Now, my focus is on writing and directing animated short films. Animation, to me, offers a unique and captivating way to explore dramatic topics and connect with the audience on a profound level.
In recent years I collaborated with Bafta winning producer Richard Barnett directing a short film for the ‘Glasses for Classes’ campaign, dedicated to improving the lives of millions of children worldwide suffering poor eyesight.
My latest short film, ‘For You’, is an intimate and deeply personal project dedicated to my son.
